If you right click in the task bar at the bottom of the screen and choose "Start Task Manager" there's a performance tab that might help pinpoint what the problem is being caused by. The processes tab will show what programs are using the most processor and memory - will help you spot where the problem is coming from. For instance if you've got (as an example) an antivirus program that's using lots of memory, maybe you need to think about using a different antivirus (or at least try reinstalling it).
Also run something like Malwarebytes Anti-malware, you never know if there's something going on that shouldn't.

Also do you remember making any changes to your PC prior to it going slow? i.e. installing new software.

The laptop is still doing myriads of tasks which you may or may not comprehend, and doing them at an amazing speed. Unfortunately the end product, the one thing you really want to happen, takes longer and longer to show itself the older the equipment gets.
gates & co keep creating more memory and system hogging software all the time, not only because they can but to create a need and desire for ever more powerful machines which do the same as the older ones but make perfectly good gear appear obsolete. Then they pull the plug on the old gear making it appear useless despite all the good work it has done. A bit like life really.
PS a reinstall may help and if possible install more memory. Or try Ubuntu (Linux) ran alongside Windows as an alternative OS.

Got a laptop bag, wireless mouse, memory stick and Norton free with it.
580 quid for HP Pavillion. Not bad at all.

I wouldn't do it if it was like 2 years.
They also have a new plan where you can get upgrades and have as much support as you need all the way through it.. It's quite a pricey monthly cost though. (well it is for a young'un like me anyway.)
